Book review: Overtaken

The grand finale of The Warrior Chronicles series and a conclusion to an action-packed series stays true to its core but shows that there are still some surprises left waiting for the reader.

The fifth book saw the group prevail in a tight and messy fight in a town controlled by their enemy, but in a much stealthier way than before. And it was quite clear that things wouldn’t be easy. The hideout of Xandre himself was yet to be found – and that’s a major issue, as you can’t deal with an enemy when you don’t know where they are.

And while Shanti and her allies are on the move, and their supporters across the land seem ready to act, Xandre himself didn’t get to the top of the food chain by sheer luck. Guile and cunning are his weapons more than the seemingly endless army of muscle or the much less common but that much powerful minions with psychic powers.

And, as it happens, all plans go out the window when that catches the heroes by surprise. But Shanti also isn’t someone to be easily beaten – she became what she is not just because of her fighting and mental skills alike, but also by being observant and, during this series, by knowing how to spot and nurture talents in others. And the best among her supporters can throw off the mastermind’s plans as much as she can.

The book – and series – is brought to a climax in a final battle for Xandre’s fortress, but in a different way than one would expect, though no less satisfying. Obviously, not much can be said without spoilers. I can say for sure there are some twists that surprised me.

My highlights

I couldn’t notice the sheer coincidence of finishing the final book exactly 10 years after it was published…

Anyway, to wrap things up, I thoroughly enjoyed this series, which had a great mix of humor, action, and memorable characters, many of whom go through a journey of their own, overcoming something that’s been with them for a while while growing their skills.
