Book review: The Rider’s Quest

The second book in the Sparks series keeps the spirit, while adding more backstory and twists. Which works great!

At the end of the first book, Aimee managed to warn the caravan of the impending danger, and they returned to the town. But that’s only the beginning of their trouble – an army of Empty Warriors – creatures with no mortal needs – is now set to besiege a city that has been safe from dangers for too long.

The dragon riders and the city leaders try to create a plan, but it seems that what they create is tension as they fail to agree on the best course of action. In mere days, the city’s gone from hopeful to afraid while facing enemies that were believed to be extinct, with no idea how to defeat so many of them.

Aimee manages to find the journal of Kyelli and decides to try and find the ancient rider based on the clues provided – which isn’t exactly easy. This delves deeper into the backstory without compromising the pacing – the threat of the attack is ever-present as she scours the town for clues along with another new rider and a historian.

Even the current leader of the riders is against her, and not only do the two need to deal with things from their past. Unfortunately, the final clue they find makes it clear they’ll need to look for the solution elsewhere – and Aimee takes a small team in a rush to confront the leader of the Empty Warriors – though that’s the plot of the third book.

My highlights

This was definitely one of my fastest reads, and it didn’t feel like 400 pages at all. With good pacing and plot twists, I’m going quite high with the rating, and I’ll definitely read the next book.
