Book review: Unbound (Songs of Chaos #2)

The first book in this series caught my attention with the level of detail and quite an unusual spin on the magic system. The second book continues the story well…

I’ll admit that just the premise of a blind dragon was intriguing. The author, by his own words, wanted to make a system where the dragon-and-rider partnership has more depth, compared to many stories where this is quite one-sided in the rider’s favor. And I’d say he succeeded.

After the events of the first book, the second book follows three main plot lines.

One focuses on Talia, who has to face the fate of her kingdom – seeing it the lesser evil, she decided to claim the throne and manage the duties of a queen and a dragon rider at once, though it’s obvious that puts quite some pressure on her. Balancing the needs of politics with the larger goal of helping the world that doesn’t want to see her on the throne puts her through much, especially emotionally.

The second plot line focuses on Holt and his blind dragon Ash, along with a handful of allies they gained in the way. They help Holt grow his power, more harshly than the Order would, while Rake also makes a crazy “all in” plan to solve the main problem – which definitely won’t be as easy as he would like to. More so when their goal to unite the dragons doesn’t seem to be going too well.

The third plot line focuses on the evil dragon and his servants, and how he reacts to the discovery of Ash’s unique power, as well as his greater schemes. This aspect is the hardest to mention without spoilers, so I won’t say much more.

As usual, these three lines converge at the end, with some discoveries made about the connection between the two antagonist forces.

My highlights

This series is a good read with a lot of thought given to the magic system. That said, considering the book ends up in a way that suggests a slight break for the characters (through the longer outro), and the fact that the series is expected to be five books long but the fourth is still in the works, I’ve decided to shelve this series for the time being and return to it once it’s finished.
